In the News: Aventura Mall’s expansion is one of two current JPRA projects featured in the “Building Boomlet” cover story of the June 2017 Shopping Centers Today (SCT) magazine published by ICSC (The International Council of Shopping Centers). Citing the long-term value of renovations, the article highlights the high-profile Aventura project: “There’s a continuing effort to add large degrees of placemaking to mall properties,” says retail project manager Brad Sanders of CBRE.
JPRA is serving as Architect of Record for Turnberry’s spectacular Aventura Expansion. The design architect Carlos Zapata Studio, is employing Zapata’s signature cantilevered elements, slanted roof lines, and even a playful slide in the outdoor piazza. Focal points will be the 84 X 50 foot glass curtain wall and the 350 ft skylight, This significant expansion will include a beautiful 241,000 square-foot, three-level wing of retail stores.

As of mid-June 2017, the steel work is complete and large areas of the new structure are dried in. Some tenants have begun construction on their store interiors. Luxury retailers Topshop Topman and Zara are among the new brands coming to the expansion.
The foundation for the Carsten Höller Slide has been installed in the piazza. Holler Slides have been making waves since they premiered at the 1998 Berlin Biennale. Turnberry, owner of Aventura, is known for their support of contemporary artists and Aventura Mall has always featured noteworthy sculpture and art installations. Their artsaventuramall.com website showcases their collection.
