MASTER PLANNING, STAGEHOUSE ADDITION, AND ELEVATOR TOWER

JPRA Architects

JPRA master-planned the adaptive re-use and expansion of the 1921 historic Grand Circus Theatre to meet the Michigan Opera Theatre's needs, including integration of non-connecting areas originally used for retail and offices as new theatre and patron support spaces and community outreach programs. Complete design, documentation and construction administration services were provided for a large stagehouse addition with a deep cantilevered stage, large wings, prop/scenery shop, 90-foot high flyloft, Wagnerian-scale orchestra pit with multiple lifts, dressing rooms and supporting spaces, secondary black-box performance space, and truck docks. New HVAC, lighting, sound, acoustical and stage equipment systems were installed, designed by a team of specialized consultants under JPRA’s direction. A new glazed elevator/stair lobby addition was also added to provide handicapped access to the balconies and a more visible public presence.
